Walk for Water

September 2 - The Results: $635 raised, 25 people served.

Why do we celebrate?

We celebrate birthdays, weddings & graduations.  We celebrate the homecoming of a friend, the landing of a new job, the retirement of a family member.

We celebrate the start of a new year, the independence of our country & numerous religious holidays.

In parts of the world, like Honduras, India & Ethiopia, they celebrate the installation of a well in their community.  They celebrate that they will have clean water for their families, for drinking, cooking and cleaning.  They celebrate that they don't need to walk 4 miles to find it.  That's a pretty good reason to celebrate if you ask me.

Although we didn't quite reach our goal, I think we have more than enough reason to celebrate.   Together we have changed the lives of 25 people!  By raising $635 we have given 25 people one of the best reasons possible for celebration, the gift of clean water.
I want to thank everyone for donating and giving their support to the Labor Day Weekend Walk for Water fundraising event.  The above video is just a sample of the ultimate goal we are contributing to.  I also want to thank everyone for taking some time out of their busy lives and walking or spreading the word.  We hear of so many sad and terrible stories on the news everyday, it's good to be reminded that there is still goodness in the world.  Thanks again & Happy Labor Day Weekend.

Before signing off, here are some pics of the Brussels Walk for Water event:

After 4 miles, we took a pit stop, a luxury most don't have.
I think we all had a great day walking for water.  With the language barrier it wasn't as easy to spread the word here,  but a few people stopped and we were able to share with them what we were doing and why.  Remember if you want to start your own fundraiser it's easy! Currently, they have a  new event where you can start a 10 lives in 10 days fundraiser (raise $250), to be entered to win a trip to help on one of the many water projects they implement every year.  As a traveller, that sounds like a real trip of a lifetime.  Click on the link to see how you can help!

**Our t-shirt order got a little messed up and mine was missing, but turns out I have a knack for making really cool & sparkly t-shirts :)**

Aug 23, 2012: UPDATE - 9 Days left and almost half way!  Can we do it?!

Almost half way to our goal of clean water for 40 people (17 served so far!) at the Labor Day Weekend  Walk for Water Fundraiser.  Please make a donation (directly at the link), share the link, walk & conserve water so we can reach the goal and make a difference in the lives of 40 people.  Only 9 days left!  Can we do it?

UPDATE: Over 1/4 way to the goal and 24 days left!

While I write this blog post about 60 children will die from a water related illness.  Sixty Children.  It may not be something we want to think about, but it is something we cannot ignore.  Every 20 seconds a child dies from a water related illness.  While a few years ago this number was 15 seconds.  People and organizations like water.org are doing everything in their power to raise awareness and change this reality and you can help.

A little less than a month until the first annual 4 Mile Walk for Water and we have already raised $275 and are over 1/4 of the way to the goal of $1,000.  So far we have served 11 people, meaning we have provided 11 people with access to safe and clean drinking water for life.  We have let a child go to school for the day, a mother go to work, a father sleep at night knowing that he doesn't have to live with the fear that his children could get a severe illness or die from the dirty water they are drinking on a daily basis.  We have made a change.  Click here to learn more about the 4 Mile Walk for Water or make a donation.  Let's make more change.
Thanks to all of those who are already joining in the 4 Mile Walk for Water.  If you want to get involved, it's easy.  Just share the link to the fundraiser and help raise awareness on the water crisis.

UPDATE: July 25, 2012 - 4 Mile Walk for Water

Imagine, instead of going to work today, you were forced to walk 6 hours to find clean water.  Not only do you need the water to survive, but your family depends on you.  Imagine not being able to work to support your family because you have to spend so much of your time each week searching for something so basic to survival.  Now imagine putting in all of this effort and not finding clean water for your family.  For most of us this is unimaginable, but for so many it is reality. A reality that we can change.

Hey everyone!  Just wanted to update you on the 4 Mile Walk for Water this Labor Day Weekend fundraiser.  So far we have raised $75 and served 3 people.  With 38 days left, I am confident we will reach our goal of $1,000 and give 40 people access to clean water for life.  I have already gotten confirmations from all over of people who will be walking 4 miles on Labor Day and raising awareness!  Please join me Labor Day weekend to walk and spread the word.  The more people who know, the greater difference we can make.

For those walking with me in Brussels, shirts have been ordered and are scheduled to arrive in a few weeks!

Anyone interested in getting shirts for their hometown walk for water can order from 100apparel.org.  For each shirt purchased, at least $10 will go to water projects in areas that need water.  Besides that, the shirts are cool.  Get your friends & family together and walk for a cause!  Just $25 gives someone clean water for life and it all starts with getting people informed.

Invitation: 4 Mile Walk for Water

Some of you may remember my post from a few weeks ago about how our apartment on holiday in Croatia had no water.  And how it was a total bummer, but more importantly how it made me realize how vital it is for our survival and how so many people don't have access to it.  Read my initial post here.  Since then, I have been thinking about the water crisis a lot and decided to start a fundraiser through water.org, not only to raise money, but to also raise awareness.

You can visit the fundraiser site here.  I want to invite you all, near or far, to join me Labor Day Weekend on a 4 Mile Walk for Water.  Why four miles?  This is the amount the average person (mostly women and children) walk per day to find clean water.  You can send the link to friends and family and create a walk of your own wherever you are located.  I have set a goal to raise $1,000, which will provide 40 people with access to clean water for life.  This gift of water will forever change the lives of these people.  It will give them the opportunity to go to school, to work, to use the time they spent searching for water now doing something productive.  They will not have to worry about getting sick from the water they drink or about their children dieing prematurely from a water related disease.  In order to donate you can go to the fundraiser site and make a tax-deductible donation directly to water.org.  Please join me in walking for water and raising awareness on the water crisis.  Please comment below if you would like to join me remotely in the 4 Mile Walk for Water.
